At ACA, we are committed to ensuring that parents and students are well-informed and thoroughly prepared for the changes to the PSLE English examination grading system in 2025.
A renewed emphasis on fostering effective communication skills, which are essential for academic achievements and lifelong success in personal and professional environments.
Enhanced Focus on Oral Skills
A significant change in the 2025 PSLE English exam is the increased weightage of the oral component, which will now contribute 40 marks, up from the previous 30 marks.
This change highlights the MOE’s commitment to improving students’ ability to articulate their thoughts and engage in meaningful interactions. The breakdown of the new oral grading system is as follows:
- Reading Aloud: Raised from 10 to 15.
- Stimulus-Based Conversation: Raised from 20 to 25.
To help ACA’s students adapt to this change, we have added more read-aloud practice with diverse texts and introduced more stimulus-based conversation topics, evaluated by two examiners during the school holiday booster classes. This helps students read confidently and familiarize themselves with the format and expectations of the stimulus-based conversation. Adjustments in Composition Writing
While reducing the total marks for composition writing from 55 to 50 marks, adjustments have been made to the situational writing format to include types of questions that assess critical thinking and exposure.
- Situational Writing: Now valued at 14 marks, previously 15 marks.
- Continuous Writing: Now valued at 36 marks, previously 40 marks.
Paper 2: Visual Text Focused on Critical Thinking
A slight reduction in total marks from 95 to 90 accompanied with a new question type in Visual Text, to assess students’ critical thinking capabilities.
More Refined Listening Comprehension
Further improvements have been made to the Listening Comprehension section to more accurately assess students’ comprehensive understanding of the English language and their critical listening skills.
